How to use a metal detector

Almost everything that goes wrong in a first session comes from three habits: swinging too fast, running the sensitivity too high, and digging every signal. Fix those and the machine starts to make sense.

Before you leave the house: bench-test it

Wave a coin, a pull tab and an iron nail under the coil, one at a time, and watch the display and listen to the tone. Ten minutes of this teaches you more than an hour in a field, because you know the answer in advance. Do it again with a gold ring if you own one - the reading will surprise you.

Ground balance, in plain terms

Soil contains minerals that the detector also sees. Ground balancing tells the machine to ignore that background so it can hear the targets on top of it. Most beginner machines do this automatically or with one button; some have preset ground settings instead. It matters most in red or iron-rich soil and on wet salty sand, where an unbalanced machine chatters constantly.

Sensitivity: lower is usually better

The instinct is to run sensitivity at maximum. In practice, high sensitivity in mineralised ground or near power lines produces a stream of false signals, and a machine that beeps at nothing teaches you to ignore it. Turn it down until the detector runs quiet and stable, then leave it there. A stable machine at 70 percent finds more than a screaming one at 100.

Swing slowly, and overlap

Keep the coil low, flat and roughly an inch above the ground, and swing at walking-pace-slow - about two to three seconds side to side. Overlap each swing by half a coil width and take small steps. Most missed targets were never under the coil in the first place.

How to read a signal before you dig

Sweep the same spot from two directions, ninety degrees apart. A good target usually gives the same ID and a short, sharp, repeatable tone from both. Iron and rubbish tend to give a broken sound, a different number from each direction, or a long smeared signal. If it does not repeat, walk on.

Pinpoint, then cut a plug, not a hole

Use the pinpoint mode to narrow the target to a spot, then cut a neat plug of turf, hinge it back, retrieve the find and press it back down. This matters beyond tidiness: careless holes are the reason clubs and landowners lose permission, and permission is what the hobby runs on.

Dig your trash out

Take the pull tabs and bottle caps home with you. Each one you remove is one you will not re-dig next season, and it is the difference between a site improving and getting worse.

Where the first session should be

Somewhere you have permission, with short grass and a known history of people - an old sports field, a park verge, a school field with permission. Not a protected site, not somebody's land you have not asked. Rules on where you may detect differ by place and change, so check the current ones for that specific spot rather than trusting a general guide.

If your machine is still fighting you after all this, it may simply be a machine with weak target ID. That is what our ranking scores hardest, because it is what makes people quit.
