Yes for gold jewellery and coins - those are ordinary targets any beginner machine handles. Largely no for natural gold flakes and small nuggets, which need a high-frequency or specialist detector and, more importantly, ground that actually contains gold.
This is the single most searched question in the hobby, and the honest answer disappoints a lot of people who bought a detector because the box had a picture of a nugget on it.
Why a gold ring is easy and a gold flake is hard
A detector responds to how well a target conducts electricity and how big it is. A ring or a coin is a solid lump of metal with a decent surface area, so it returns a clear signal. A thin flake of natural gold is tiny, often irregular, and frequently sitting in ground full of iron minerals that drown its response.
That difference is not about quality. It is physics, and it is why prospecting machines exist as a separate category.
Frequency is the dividing line
Lower frequencies see deeper on large, highly conductive targets like silver coins. Higher frequencies are far more sensitive to small, low-conductivity targets - which is exactly what small gold is. General-purpose beginner detectors sit in the middle, which is the right compromise for coins, jewellery and relics.
Multi-frequency machines, which used to be expensive and now appear at entry prices, run several frequencies at once and cope much better with mineralised ground and wet sand. That is the practical advantage of a machine like the Minelab Vanquish 360, rather than any special ability to see gold.

The part nobody mentions: the ground
No detector puts gold where there is none. Natural gold occurs in specific geology, and prospectors work known ground for a reason. Buying a gold-capable machine to swing over a suburban park is spending money on the wrong problem.
Meanwhile a park, a beach or an old sports field genuinely does contain lost gold jewellery, and an ordinary beginner detector will find it.
Why target ID will not say gold
Gold's conductivity lands close to aluminium. On the display, a gold ring often reads in the same range as a pull tab - which is why experienced detectorists deliberately dig some of that range instead of discriminating it out. If your machine is set to reject pull tabs, it is rejecting rings too.
If you want to find gold jewellery, do not discriminate out the pull-tab range. You will dig more trash. That is the price.
So what should a beginner buy
An honest all-rounder, and a beach or park to swing it over. Every detector in our ranking will find gold jewellery. None of them will turn a garden into a goldfield, and any listing that suggests otherwise is selling a picture, not a machine.
